How a New Authority Request Works

Filing is made

Keep these handy
- USDOT and MC numbers if assigned
- Driver licenses and experience
- Truck and trailer VINs
- Planned commodities and states
- Business formation documents

Request early
You do not need to wait for your MC number to ask for quotes. Requesting early gives you time to compare options and line up a down payment, so the filing can go in soon after the docket number is assigned.
What the agent asks
Expect questions about who owns the company, each driver's experience and record, the trucks and their values, the freight you plan to haul and where you will run. Answer accurately; a policy based on wrong information can be rescinded or cause claim problems later.
Checking the filing
After coverage is bound, ask when the filing will be made and check the public FMCSA record. Your authority cannot activate until the filing and BOC-3 are on file.
Free to ask, free to decline
A quote request for a new authority is free. If the numbers do not work for your startup budget, say no and ask us to stop.
If coverage is hard to place
Some new authorities, especially with limited driving experience or certain freight, find few insurers willing to quote. If that happens, ask the agent what would improve the options, such as more experience, a different commodity or leasing on to an established carrier for a period first.
